Alstonville is a charming town in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. It lies on the Bruxner Highway 13km to the east of Ballina and 19km to the west of Lismore. It has a population of 5,648.

History

Once known as Duck Creek Mountain, Alstonville was established by cedar cutters in the 1860s. It takes its name from the large quantity of wild duck found on Duck Creek which flows by the outskirts of the town.

Sugar cane and dairy farming have been important industries over time. Today, the Alstonville relies heavily on tourism thanks to its proximity to the booming towns of Lismore and Ballina.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The rich, red volcanic soils of Alstonville produce avocados, macadamia nuts, tropical fruit and coffee. The area is also famous for its striking Tibouchina trees which line the town’s streets.

There are a number of worthwhile attractions in the town including Summerland House with No Steps and the award-winning gift shop, Christmas All Year Round.
