Alexandria is situated in New South Wales and within walking distance to the city. The suburb has a population of over 7,000, as well as a great cafe culture.

History

The area of Alexandria and the town of Waterloo were both named in honour of the British Empire military and victories over Napoleon. In 1868, Alexandria was split from Waterloo to become an independent suburb.

By 1943, Alexandria was the biggest industrial area in the country. People called the area the “Birmingham of Australia.” In 1902, a tram line opened. It closed in 1959.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Alexandria is still a thriving industrial area. The town has 3 major train stations and an airport nearby. Not only does the suburb have plenty of cafes and parks but it’s also home to the South Sydney Markets.

This suburb has lots of pubs and hotels. The Yiu Ming Temple of Retreat Street has attracted a Chinese community.
