Richardson is a Canberra suburb in the Tuggeranong district. It sits 22km south of the city centre, and has a population of more than 3,100. Richardson is bordered by Chisholm, Calwell, Monash, Gowrie, and Isabella Plains.

History

Richardson was founded in 1975, and named in honour of Henry Handel Richardson. This was the pen name of Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson, who wrote the Fortunes of Richard Mahony trilogy. Many streets in Richardson are named after female writers. In 1984, Richardson Primary School opened up. It would later be known as the first school in the country to use interactive whiteboards.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Heritage-listed Tuggeranong Homestead is Richardson’s biggest draw. It’s a big site for weddings and functions. The homestead hosts a special market on the first Sunday of every month. The Richardson Oval is a popular park, and Tuggeranong Creek runs through the suburb. Various outlets are dotted about, such as Supabarn Express and Richardson Hair Studio.
