Mitchell is a light-industrial estate in Canberra in the district of Gungahlin. Although it has no housing estates, it had a population of 6 in the 2001 census.

History

Mitchell was named to honour the explorer Major Sir Thomas Livingston Mitchell. An explorer of inland NSW, he was the Surveyor General of the state until his death in 1855. The streets in the are named after Australian industrialists.

It’s believed by Canberra residents that Mitchell is home to Exhibition Park and Thoroughbred Park (a racecourse). These are, in fact, found in Lyneham – the neighbouring suburb.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Along with the small suburb of Fyshwick, Mitchell is one of only two areas in Canberra where brothels can operate legally. The estate is home to one strip club and a few adult industry shops.
