Majura is a district in Canberra, surrounded by Mt Ainslie and Mt Majura. It’s covered by the Majura Field Firing Range and Canberra Airport. It has a population of 249.

History

The area was used by the Ngunnawal people prior to British settlement. Surveys show it was a transitory camping area used on journeys between Lake George and Yass.

Robert Campbell, a Scotsman, settled the area in 1825. He named the property Majura, after Majura in India. He was assigned convict labourers, but also sought free settlers as farm workers. Development of the area began in the 1860’s when the workers settled near Campbell’s property. They were given land by the government, following land reforms in 1861.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The area has few dwellings. There is a school, community hall and Post Office. It is not suitable for residence because of Canberra Airport.
