Kingston is a suburb of Canberra and is the oldest and one of the most densely populated in the city. Situated about 4km from the centre of Canberra, it has a population of around 3,000.

History

Kingston gets its name from Charles Cameron Kingston, the former Premier of South Australia.

During the early development of Canberra, Eastlake occupied the area now known as Kingston. Eastlake was a workers’ living quarters whereas the suburb of Forrest was reserved for middle and higher-ranking public servants. Eastlake Football and Cricket Club is one of only a few reminders of Kingston’s past.

Kingston has seen a lot of redevelopment in recent years with many new units and townhouses.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Kingston is home to one of the oldest shopping areas built in Canberra, Kingston Shopping Centre. Part of the park is built around a small park called Green Square. The suburb is also known for having a lively bar scene.
