History

Garran takes its name from Sir Robert Garran. Born in 1867, Sir Robert Randolph Garran is known as Australia’s first public servant. He is also recognised as a man who made enormous efforts to the development of Canberra’s higher education.

First established in 1966, Garran is considered a young suburb. Visitors will notice that the suburb’s streets take their names from Australian writers.
