Franklin is a suburb in the district of Gungahlin, Canberra’s northernmost area. It is around 10km north of Canberra’s central business district, and has a population of around 3,804 according to the 2011 census.

History

Franklin is a relatively new area in Canberra. The population of Franklin, and its larger district, has grown in the past 25 years due to suburban development. The area is named after the Australian writer and feminist, Miles Franklin. All the streets in Franklin are named after writers.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Franklin is a highly livable suburb, with large open spaces and a pedestrian and cycling network. The area has plenty of reserves and historic sites, including grasslands, creeks, and the heritage-listed Red Hill site, with old pipeclay mine. Gunghalin’s town centre is just a short drive away, and has plenty of shops and cafes.
