History

Deakin became a suburb in 1928. Its name comes from Australia’s second Prime Minister, Alfred Deakin.

Public servants moved into the area following World War II. Most housing was built in the post-war years. Some of these buildings are heritage-listed.

Celebrity-spotters can hang out outside the Lodge on Adelaide Ave. It is the Prime Minister’s official residence. Several embassies and high commissions are located in Deakin.
