Bonython became a suburb in 1986. Today, 3,837 people live on the site of former grazing land.

History

Before 1986, Bonython was grassland and gum trees. By 1989, developers were building units, apartments and townhouses. The area became a thriving suburb.

In 2003, a catastrophic bushfire reached the fence lines of Bonython homes. The wind had eased and residents were able to save their homes.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Bonython is perched on the sides of Mt Stranger. A manmade dam on the edge of the suburb forms Stranger Pond.
Landscaping around the pond offers a habitat for native wildlife. Locals can spot swans, pelicans and kangaroos on the walking trails.

The suburb has a few shops and one primary school. It is close to the Tuggeranong Town Centre, which hosts major employers including government agencies. Many residents can walk to work.
