Banks is a southern suburb of the capital Canberra. It is found in the district of Tuggeranong. It has a population of 5,060. Conder and Gordon are neighbouring suburbs.

History

Sir Joseph Banks is the namesake of Banks, ACT. He joined Captain James Cook in 1770 to Botany Bay. Since he was a botanist, many of the streets are named after animals and plants. Banks became official in 1987 with mention in the local newspaper. The town is surrounded by hills which used to be volcanoes, and erupted over 414 million years ago.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Banks has 1 main shopping centre with restaurants, hairdressers, and a food shop. The Rob Roy Nature Reserve is nearby for more adventurous sorts. More accessible than Mt Rob Roy is Big Monk mountain, not far from Wollemi Place. Paragliding and hang-gliding are popular outdoor activities. Both are possible from Big Monk’s gliding stage.
