Amaroo is a suburb of Canberra, in the district of Gungahlin. Amaroo is 12km from the centre of Canberra. It is next to the suburbs of Bonner, Jacka, Moncrieff, and Ngunnawal. It has a population of 5,569.

History

The word Amaroo means ‘beautiful place’ in the dialects of local aborigines. Many local places celebrate this beauty with names derived from Australian lakes and rivers. The suburb is somewhat young. It was gazetted in 1991. But the town dates back to the time when John and Maria Crinigan lived in their stone cottage in the mid 1800s.

Amaroo is served by several local shopping centres, and is only 1km away from the centre of Gungahlin. It is home to the pretty Yerrabin Pond. There are a number of preschools, primary schools, and middle/high schools, with sporting facilities.
