History

James Ainslie, the first overseer of Duntroon Station, is the town’s namesake. Developers built three housing areas based on Garden City principles. The ACT’s Government Heritage department gazetted them onto their registry in 2004.

The first developments were built in 1925. These homes were for public servants and workmen working on new Parliament House. The Government gazetted the suburb in 1928. Pioneers and legislators inspired the street names. Despite its humble routes, the area was gentrified with properties worth over $1 million.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Ainslie has local shops in the middle of the town. There is a supermarket, cafe, pharmacy and pilates studio. Residents can access Mt Ainslie on foot. There is a paved walk and “goat track” up the hill. Kangaroos often come into town at night and eat grass from nature strips.
