Acton is a suburb in Canberra. It lies to the west of Canberra’s Central Business District. Black Mountain sits to the west, and Lake Burley Griffin sits in the south. According to the 2011 census, Acton has a population of 1,993 people.

History

Acton takes its name from the Acton homestead. In 1911, the Federal Capital was formed. At the same time, a temporary workers camp launched in the area. Acton was formally established in 1928.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Most of Acton is the Australian National University. ANU is the only university created by Australia’s Parliament. It was founded in 1946. ANU is one of the world’s top universities. According to the QS World University Rankings, ANU is 22 in the world.

Other interesting buildings are in Acton. These include the National Film and Sound Archive and the National Museum of Australia. The CSIRO also has a branch in Acton.
